Our Scheme

Our Scheme

At the end of the scheme, you'll be given support in matching your ambitions and strengths to available vacancies in commercial, operations or one of our head office functions.

ABOUT OUR SCHEME

We've set-up the graduate scheme to find talented people we can develop to run the PLC in the future. The programme will develop your management skills and give you a full understanding of Smiths News, our culture, our people and our industry. If you've got the right talent and ambition, we'll give you every opportunity to succeed.

The 18 month programme focuses on the Operations and Commercial sides of the business. You'll have an initial six-month placement in each function where you will gain hands on experience in the department and support various business initiatives and projects. Your final placement will be discussed with you and will depend on your interests and opportunities within the business. There will also be the unique opportunity for one graduate to complete a placement in our Corporate Development function.

We operate 24 hours a day, 364 days a year, and within your operations placement there will be some shift work and some night working (though this will not be for the whole of the placement.) You will need a full understanding of our business and this is best gained through experience at our distribution centres. You will need to be mobile and able to move around the UK.

Unusually for a graduate training programme, our scheme is flexible. Continual feedback and performance reviews tailor training to your individual needs. Access to senior management, including mentoring, gives direction and purpose. We will work with you to create your own personal plan to support your on-going career development.

What opportunities will there be at the end of the scheme?
At the end of the scheme, you'll be given support in matching your ambitions and strengths to available vacancies in commercial, operations or one of our head office functions. Our current graduates have gone on to take up substantive roles in our Newspaper Account Management Team, HR and central Operations.

Smiths News is growing and we are actively seeking new business. This will create new opportunities for graduates and our current staff. We already sell our IT technology to other companies outside the UK and with recent acquisitions such as Bertrams, there will be a multitude of opportunities on offer in the future.
