Community

We are committed to supporting the communities we serve. Our people are dedicated to helping small local charities as well as big national causes.

We set our selves targets and challenges every year

Last year we helped raise more than £400,000 for our industry charity, NewstrAid

We focus our efforts on four main areas, Marketplace, Community, Environment and Workplace. We set our selves targets and challenges every year. Our employees are crucial to our success.

Giving money

Last year we helped raise more than £400,000 for our industry charity, NewstrAid. We have adopted two charities – Whizz Kids for disabled children and Cancer Research UK. These were chosen in conjunction with our employee forum. Staff can choose to give to these two causes through Pennies from Heaven, a scheme that donates loose pennies from salaries. Staff can also give to charities of their choice through their salary using an initiative called "Give As You Earn".

We support Geared for Giving, a professional fundraising organisation that encourages companies to adopt payroll-giving schemes in the workplace. Geared for Giving is championed by Swindon MP Anne Snelgrove. She said: 'It’s great for companies and even better for staff and I’m glad that Smiths News is such an active and enthusiastic supporter.'

Volunteering

We have our own volunteering policy that follows best practice guidelines laid down by Volunteering England. The policy is open to everyone, offering staff the opportunity to apply for time off to support a charity or community event that’s important to them.

We’re really proud of the effort and involvement our people show in causes close to their hearts.
