Tell us about your job

We have a day and a twilight pack in Newport, and it is my job to coordinate them working with a Pack Merchandiser to ensure that the right products go to the right pack, with the correct amount for each.
When stock arrives in volume, it is put on to two conveyor belts, with a sophisticated computerised light system indicating which titles are to be packed into each tote box to fulfil customers’ individual orders. The totes travel down the two lines, passing from one packer to another before being banded, stacked on a pallet and then placed on a vehicle.

What’s it like to work for Smiths News?

It’s a great place to work if you like to challenge yourself and learn new skills. There are so many different departments that you can move around and try different roles. You can be young, middle-aged or older – this is a really fantastic place to come and work with a diverse range of individuals.
I like the way that you can have your say and there is plenty of good communication within the company, with briefings, sometimes on a daily basis. There’s informational TV in the middle of the warehouse, which keeps you updated with what’s happening, who’s visited and health and safety information. There are also a lot of opportunities for you to become a key colleague, Team Leader – or even a manager.

Tell us about your career path

I first joined Smiths News in 2015 as a Stockroom Returns Manager in Newport. I later moved to the Hemel site, where I was made Operations Manager, selling my house and moving to Bedfordshire.
I left the company in 2019 for a short time and went to work for two local companies, one specialising in ambient foods, the other in plastics. I eventually decided it was time to return to the Newport/Cardiff area and rejoined Smiths News as Pack Manager

What do you do in your downtime?

I’m a typical guy – I love my football! I support Arsenal and go to the matches whenever I can afford it, as it’s very expensive. I played a lot of football at amateur level and was quite good. I retired only three years ago, but I still like to keep active to make sure that the brain and the body are as good as they can be.
